I decided to go for something a little more modern with movie #2.  2012’s American Mary. This picture follows the plight of Mary, a poor medical student who’s running out of cash. Like any self-respecting med student, she turns to stripping. While she’s having her stripper interview (to which she brought her resume) some dude  shows up in dire need of medical attention. Mary makes a fast $5,000.  Mary gets tangled up in the body modification community, doing procedures that  most doctors wouldn’t do.  Along the way, she goes a little nuts.

There are lots of not-so-great reviews of this movie out there. Many of them make valid points. However, I really dug this flick. Katherine Isabelle (Ginger from Ginger Snaps) plays the lead in a delightfully deadpan style, and she totally made the movie for me. The movie did a great job,  I felt, cinematographically—it showed just the right amount of gore, and cut away in all the right places. The soundtrack too was particularly pleasing. The downfall, I’d have to say would be the way the plot meandered and roamed. Some reviews say it transcended the typical three act structure, I say it got lost and wandered around a bit. I’m still not sure why it was called American Mary…anyone know?
